Getting stopped by the police or FRSC without the correct documents can lead to fines, embarrassment, and even impoundment. To help you stay prepared, we’ve compiled the essential documents every driver in Nigeria must carry at all times.
1. Driver's License
Your driver’s license is the most important document. It proves you are legally allowed to drive. Ensure it is valid (not expired) and that the details match your identity. If your license is lost or expired, you risk a fine of up to ₦10,000.
2. Vehicle License (Roadworthiness)
This sticker (often called roadworthiness) must be displayed on your windscreen. It certifies that your vehicle has passed the basic safety inspection. It must be renewed annually. Driving without a valid vehicle license can attract a fine of ₦3,000–₦5,000.
3. Insurance Certificate
Third‑party insurance is compulsory. You must carry either the physical certificate or a digital copy. Without it, you face a penalty of at least ₦5,000. Comprehensive insurance is optional but highly recommended.
4. Vehicle Registration Papers
These prove ownership and that the vehicle is properly registered with the authorities. If you bought a used car, ensure the change of ownership has been processed and you have the new papers in your name.
5. Hackney Permit (for commercial vehicles)
If you operate a taxi, bus, or any commercial vehicle, you must display a valid Hackney Permit. This is a separate document from the regular vehicle license. Fines for operating without it can be steep – often ₦20,000 or more.
6. Proof of Ownership (Receipt of Purchase)
Especially for newer vehicles, carrying the original receipt or invoice can help prove ownership in case of disputes. It’s not always checked, but it’s wise to have it.
7. Police Extract (if applicable)
If you’ve recently lost your plate or had an accident, carry the police report until you get a replacement or the issue is resolved.
Digital Copies – A Smart Backup
While originals are required, having high‑quality photos of all documents on your phone can be a lifesaver. Some officers accept digital copies for minor checks, but always carry originals for major inspections.
